The whole school went to the hall to watch the Waimea College play all sorts of instruments.They were playing incredible songs like the Pink Panther,Simpsons , Lord of the rings, and Music of the Night. They showed us all of the amazing instruments there was a Flute, clarinet, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, oboe, trombone, trumpet, french horn, piano, and violin. All of the songs were soft and had a little bit of rhythm in them as well.

The most amazing and exciting bit for me was getting to go up the front and be the conductor for the very last song.It was a bit embarrassing but it was so much fun, I was waving the stick up and down looking up at the instrument's but also looking at the peace of paper( music). I had a great time and i think you will enjoy it as well.

Yesterday we went to a a wicked show called You've got the power! It was all about anti-bulling there was an amazing illusionist whose name is "Algregoe" he told us that bullying is the most worst thing you can ever do at school and he showed us some of his wicked tricks ! Some people like me went up to volunteered to help him with his tricks. After you would get a prize!

We learnt that you need to keep your "wits" about you.
W - walk away
I - ignore them
T - talk to someone
S - Say Stop

It is easier to do the right thing than have to make up for it. We need to be good role models especially as year 5 and 6 students.

Simple circuits

Hi in Room 11 we have been studying simple circuits. For simple circuits you need two wires connected to ether side of a battery the other ends of the wires connect to a light bulb you may also add a switch. That's how you make a simple circuit :)

The Senior Syndicate Eco Group have helped paint a picture on Peter's new shed. In December they planted swan plants and now they're tall and growing chrysalis. We have lots of caterpillars and we like watching them. Have a look when you come to school next!

Red Cross Course

On Wednesday 28th of October 2009, Amy from the Red Cross came to our school to demonstrate what to do when someone is unconscious, and how to keep them alive until an ambulance arrives.
We also did the doctors abc's and she told us what to do if someone was choking, had a burn or had contact with poison. We also learned what to do if someone broke a bone and how to open someones airway.
The Drs abc is "d" for danger, "r" for response, "s" for send for help, "a" for airway, "b" for breathing and "c" for circulation.

There are two new classrooms being built and that will hopefully be finished by the end of the year. They are building them everyday and bothers us because it is noisy.

This morning twelve boys from the senior syndicate went down to the library with Dobbie to play with some Lego, following the instructions and making models. The kids really enjoyed it because they got to play with the Lego. When they finished they put their lego designs in the trophy cabinet.

This morning we went into room 10 to do some technology stuff. We had 15 minutes to make a bridge out of newspaper,cellotape and string. It had to be 15 cm off the ground and could get a toy bus over. We had to use everything we had and I have to say that it was quite a challenge. 1 group got the bus over and the other groups hadn't finished. We stay in the same room for 4 weeks and then pick another room to go in.This is my group.

We almost got it done but it didn't stay up by itself so we have a plan for next week.

Today we did some science experiments in room 11.
We did ones like how many drops fit on a coin and we found that some people got 14 while others got 40.

Next we did one called Moving Milk, we put 3 different colors around the center and then put a cotton bud in the middle
and nothing happened. Then we put dishwashing liquid on the bud and the colors EXPLODED all around

On the 3rd of March the senior syndicate went on camp to Bethany Park. There were 86 children and 10 teachers/camp parents. We spent four busy days tramping, swimming, kayaking and taking part in a wide range of beach activities. The children all had a great time and went home very tired!!! Check out some of our photos.

On Saturday the Weet-Bix triathlon was held in Tahunanui. Eleven people from Room11 competed. There was running for 1.5 km, swimming for 100 metres and then you had to bike 6 km.

On Friday the senior syndicate went to the Rainbow Ski Field for our ski trip. When we got there we all went to this room and we got told what to do and the rules of skiing and boarding. After, we went to get your boots and gear and went outside. At first it felt funny but after awhile we got the feel of it. We all started on the beginner's slope. It was a fun day but we were all tired after it.

"KIDS IN SPACE"

On the 13 & 14 of August Brightwater School
put on the production "KIDS IN SPACE", it was amazing!
The storyline was about a boy called Cumulo who gets stuck
in a black hole, meets some crazy friends and gets re-united

This Thursday we enjoyed a wonderful performance by Sam Derchi. We saw some very interesting instruments of Ghana Africa [Birth place of Sam]. He told us about the story of the stories. It was about how a spider had to collect three things to give to the Sky God so he could have stories to tell to the villagers. He collected a live leopard, a live snake and a pot full of bees that sting like fire. He told us about his grandma getting chased by monkeys through the jungle.

Kiwi sports day

On Wednesday the 12th of september the year 5 and 6 children from Brightwater, Ranzau, Appleby, Hope and Wakefield schools went to the Brightwater Domain for Kiwi sports day.
We were all split into groups, each group had kids from all the different schools. We participated
in a variety of sports, such as, Soccer, cricket, Orienteering, Hockey etc. There was a total of 12 sports altogether. It was a beautiful sunny day and we had an awesome time. We met up with some of our friends from other schools.One of the favorites were Orienteering.

First I put 3 drops of food colouring in.
Then I put in some detergent.
The detergent breaks the surface tension so the food colouring just can't really stay in one place.

Bethany Camp 2007

At the start of 2007 the year 5 and 6 went to Bethany Camp. At Bethany Camp they have a water slide it was a lot of fun. On Thursday we went for a three hour walk at Apple Tree Bay. I liked everything about camp.

At Bethany camp everybody was so excited to be there. On Wednesday the year 5 and 6 children went on a walk around Kaiteriteri we where put in groups, it was A to F. The things we had to do were sand sculptures and a sketch of something at the beach. One of the fun things was kayaking!

On the left we have Selma and on the right we have Claire.
Claire is a teenager and Selma is her Grandma.
Selma and Claire are made out of socks.
Selma's eyes are made of buttons and Claire's eyes have been drawn on with vivid.

Dear Diary

Dear Diary,

Today was the most shiny day at school! casey didn't speak to me all day. I happily forgot my homework for math class. My new friend sam isn't talking to me anymore. And to top it all off, I forgot my lunch, so I had to borrow money to buy lunch. I hate borrowing money, I hate forgetting my homework, and I hate it when my friends don't talk to me! !! I hope tomorrow is a better day!

Dear Diary,

Everything was much better today. casey wasn't mad at me; she was just upset because her parents would not let her go to a party. She was wacky toward everyone. My math teacher said she'd only take one point off my homework because this was the only time I'd ever forgotten anything. She said everyone makes thick mistakes sometimes. My new friend sam is talking to me. He was just busy helping out a sick friend. He had to gather all of his friend's homework. My friend who loaned me the money for lunch yesterday said I didn't have to pay him back, because I had loaned him money for lunch a while ago. I hope every day is a good as today!

On Friday 10 November we held "Push Play" Day. We had lots of cool games, which we played with a buddy class. The older children were buddied with the young ones. Everyone had a great time being active!

The Gulper eel has a enormous mouth and is also known as the pelican eel. Gulper eels do not have a swim bladder or scales like other fish. They are normally black and grow to be 30 inches long. It's mouth has lots tiny teeth, and its huge lower jaw can stretch to eat things bigger than it's self. Sometimes it swims with it's mouth open feeding on plakton. Sometimes gulpers have a redish light on the end of it's tail to attract prey.

This is a sea horse and they are found in the sunlit zone. Did you know that the sea horses head is like a horses head and the sea horses tail looks like a monkeys tail.
Also, baby sea horses are born in an unusal way. The mother sea horse lays the eggs in the fathers pouch on the fathers belly. The father carries the eggs untill they hatch.
Also, sea horses swim with heads up and their tails down. They bob up and down in the water.
When they move up and down they look like horses on a merry-go-round.
